This small courtyard garden in Holland Park has been lowered from its original level to meet the finished floor levels of its newly renovated townhouse by Johanna Molineus Architects. The existing garden walls have been underpinned and restored. The concrete required for the structural integrity of the wall is left exposed, juxtaposed to the historic brickwork, creating a gentle palimpsest. Limestone setts and a full width limestone bench complete the hard material palette. The simplicity of the garden layout draws attention to the combination of materials, allowing their unique textures and tonal variations to be prominent, and to be celebrated. A Persian ironwood tree sits to one side of the garden, creating a pleasing imbalance and offering space to gather, and socialise on the bench.
